Responsibilities This position will provide professional veterinary technical support to departmental veterinarians and hands on care to animals on R&D studies and QC tests. Aid all departmental staff in compliance to USDA Animal welfare act and operation in accordance with standards accepted by AAALAC.

1-A). Provide primary veterinary technical and nursing care to departmental animals. Observation of animals to assure good health and early identification of disease. Administration of pharmaceutical and biologicals by a variety of routes. Assist with pre, intra and post animal research/test procedures and care. 1-I). Animal health procedures are performed properly and in a timely manner as instructed by a veterinarian. 2-A). Implement the animal environmental enrichment and socialization program. 2-I). All animals are provided species-appropriate forms of environment as recognized by industry standards unless specifically restricted by protocol. 3-A). Coordinate receipt and shipment of diagnostic samples and test articles. 3-I). Diagnostic samples will be received and process as requested by investigators. Samples collected for submission to diagnostic laboratories will be packaged and shipped according to DOT, IATA or other applicable regulations. 4-A). Maintain the pharmacy and veterinary supplies inventories, including ordering. Perform diagnostic testing and in house sample preparation as necessary. Serve as point of contact for researchers to request veterinary supplies and drugs. Maintain records and monitor access to DEA controlled drug inventories. 4-I). The pharmacy will be adequately stocked with common general use supplies, including drugs and vaccines, to facilitate daily departmental activities. Requests for study-specific supplies will be completed in a manner as not to delay or interrupt study activities. Controlled drug supplies will be maintained and monitored for accuracy, and any discrepancies reported to department management. 5-A). Conduct post approval monitoring of active AUPs. 5-I). In process AUPs will be monitored as directed by the IACUC chair and reported. 6-A). Maintain the routine health maintenance program schedule for long term VS animal colonies. 6-I). Long-term resident animals will be scheduled for regular health maintenance, including vaccinations, deworming, dental procedures, hoof trimming, etc. as determined by good husbandry practices and in consultation. 7-A). Assist department personnel in maintaining accurate and up to date medical records. 7-I). Animal records are current and reflect accurate medical history. 8-A). Assist in the design and coordination of the sanitation effectiveness program. 8-I). Records of effective cleaning procedures are available or areas needing improvement are identified early and corrected. 9-A). Serve as a trainer for hands on animal use methodologies. 9-I). Research personnel and VS staffs are trained in common techniques as noted in a decrease in repeat defiance findings

Basic Qualifications

  • AA Degree in Veterinary Science or related field required

  • Completion of Post Offer Exam, Completion of Work Simulation or Completion of Administrative Skills Testing if applicable.
