Manages the micro utilities group overseeing testing of DIW, WFI, clean steam and process gases. Manages all group activities of QC staff which may include supervisory level. Serves as an expert on the methods (TPC, endotoxin, TOC, conductivity) performed in the group and the results obtained. Possesses extensive experience and knowledge in the field of Microbiology. Performs advanced level work in a cGMP compliant manner such as creating and/or revising technical documents, training new/existing employees on procedures and job functions. Plans work for the group to respond to changing priorities. Maintains a safe orderly and compliant work area according to company standards and GMP regulations. Works independently but ensures communication of critical information to senior management for key decision making. Participates in the budget process. Monitors group spending to remain on track with budget. Takes initiative to make things better for the company. Leads by example and builds collaborative relationships. Builds a strong, responsive team that is reliable and flexible to shifting demands. Responsible for backing up management as needed.

Primary Responsibilities

Manages all group activities of QC microbiology utilities staff

  • Organizes and directs departmental and interdepartmental meetings.

  • Reviews test results for conformance with specifications and effective documents.

  • On time trending of data for the assigned laboratory group. Evaluates data to detect product or method-related trends. Writes periodic trend summaries.

  • Compiles and analyzes data, prepares graphs and writes SOPs/Reports. Conducts documentation reviews.

  • Strong focus on data integrity and compliance

Personnel Management and Development

  • Uses scientific expertise to provide assistance with troubleshooting, laboratory investigations and problem resolutions.

  • Implements process improvements with management.

  • Takes ownership and accountability of decisions and actions.

  • Identifies analytical projects required to achieve group and corporate objectives. Sets group objectives with management.

  • Represents the company through effective interactions with regulatory agencies and auditors.

  • Interviews, hires and supervises QC Microbiology personnel.

  • Evaluates, coaches and manages personnel performance. Prepares performance reviews, facilitates disciplinary actions, and resolves personnel issues.

Basic Qualification

  • B.S. or M.S. in Microbiology or related sciences.

  • Previous management experience; 3-5 years with B.S. or 1-2 years with M.S./Ph.D. Proven competence in area to be supervised with 5-7 years of related technical experience.

Additional Skills and Preferences

  • Excellent working knowledge of cGMP regulations for QC laboratory applications

  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills - collaborates well with others and provides direct hands on support to staff

  • Attentive to detail

  • Strong compliance and data integrity mindset

  • Good computer skills. Competent with computerized data storage systems (i.e. MoDA, LIMS, TrackWise, etc)

  • Ability to take initiative, to be assertive, to lead by example and to build relationships. Strategic thinking capabilities
