Plant Engineer Critical Utilities – FUME – LBB

Position Brand Description:

This position is responsible for the design, operation, maintenance, testing and monitoring of critical utility systems used at Lilly Branchburg to support biotech manufacturing facilities. This system(s) could include industrial waste, plant steam, HVAC, chillers, purified water, water for injection, clean steam, clean dry air and/or other systems as required in the manufacturing process. This position will interact with various team members on Process Teams, including Engineering, Maintenance, Manufacturing, Validation, and Quality Assurance and other Lilly Sites as required. Knowledge of these critical systems or appropriate training is required. Responsibilities could include managing improvement activities to ensure that project scope, budget and schedules are maintained. Responsibilities also include preparing the appropriate change control documentation prior to making changes on validated systems.

Key Objectives/Deliverables:

Manage for Results /Strategic Planning:

Act as the system owner and subject matter expert for a utilities area such as: industrial waste, plant steam, HVAC, chillers, purified water, WFI, clean steam, CDA and process gases. Responsible for supporting clinical and commercial manufacturing operations through representation on Process Teams:

  • Knowledgeable of applicable corporate standards, regulations and guidelines that pertain to the utility operations and equipment.

  • Understanding of the equipment and unit operation design characteristics, age, controls and capabilities for all supported processes.

  • Knowledgeable of Process Flow Diagrams (PFD), Critical Process Parameters (CPPs), Critical Operating Parameters (COPs), throughput/capacity to guide decision making.

  • Understanding of the process models built for the BB utility systems.

  • Understand the cost and value of the process at each step.

  • Perform the function of Responsible Engineer for BB critical Utilities.

  • Provide technical oversight for the critical utility systems and city water process team. Responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing the basis for equipment qualification and ensuring it is appropriate for the intended purpose.

  • Ensure changes, maintenance and other interventions don’t adversely impact the qualification state of the equipment.

  • Establish and coordinate with QC in system sampling plan to ensure compliance with regulatory, industry and company requirements.

  • Review and/or approve Asset Qualification Management (AQM) for the systems to ensure they remain fit for their intended use.

  • Provide guidance on key elements of return to service requirements for equipment and interventions.

  • Provide guidance on the equipment reliability processes for existing systems and equipment.

  • Ensure appropriate root causes and corrective actions are identified through troubleshooting and investigation processes.

  • Champion the adherence to the engineering functional standards, ensure compliance with associated Global Quality Standard (GQS) and provide peer reviews of active engineering projects and documents.

  • Serve as the project lead for major capital and expense projects.

  • Review process performance metrics presented by front line engineers and utility operators and provide guidance on root cause analysis and action plans as necessary.

  • Have a deep knowledge of engineering first principles, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), statistical tools and champion the use of these tools within the engineering process teams, sites and contractors.

  • Consistently demonstrate good technical and business justification documentation for projects including project plans, HSE reviews, design documents, business cases, etc. for driving technical agendas.

  • Know the system users, their requirements and limitations and provide consultation to customer groups on site utility requirements and consumption as needed.

  • Participate as a member of the associated process teams.

  • Provide technical review and oversight of process master plans

Manage Relationships with Key Stakeholders and Customers:

Plant engineer will interact with Utilities, Manufacturing, HSE, QA, QC, Automation Engineering, Validation, design consultants and construction contractors.

Basic Requirements:

Bachelor of Science, Chemical, Mechanical Engineering, related engineering discipline.

Minimum 5 years industrial experience in a cGMP environment. Strong written and oral communication skills Curious, and solution driven. Self-directed personality, with ability to work independently, self-sufficiently, and proactively in the performance of work duties.
