Lilly Director, Nucleic Acid/RNA/DNA Biology in Cambridge, Massachusetts

At the Lilly Innovation Institute for Genetic Medicine in Cambridge, Massachusetts, we explore how next generation therapeutics, new technologies, data analytics and new care models can improve patient health and the healthcare system. Our team, the Novel Therapeutic Modalities (NTM), in Cambridge shares a real passion for challenging conventional wisdom and creating an environment that embraces creative, break-through concepts. The Center offers a start-up environment with large company support. It is located in the heart of Massachusetts’ exploding science and technology cluster and is within walking distance of some of the best academic and industry innovators in the world.

The successful candidate will have a strong research track record in biology (wet lab and/or computational) and be analytically-minded, systematic, and embrace data-driven decision making. The scientist will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to perform experiments to aid development of RNA oligomer drug candidates for the next generation of RNA therapies.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Recruit, hire, train and supervise a team of nucleic acid biologists, biochemists, and/or biophysicists

  • Evaluate novel nucleic acid modalities (e.g., DNA editing and/or therapy, RNA editing, mRNA) using cell and molecular biology techniques (transfection or electroporation of various cell lines and primary cells, qPCR, Western blot, sequencing, luminescence-based assays).

  • Visualize, summarize, and present results to team members

  • Contribute to scientific projects where solutions are developed through interactions with diverse talent across the larger organization, including therapeutic areas (Neuroscience; Diabetes, obesity, and related complications; immunology) and development.

  • Identify and drive solutions toward innovation in the RNA Therapeutics area

  • Demonstrate high learning agility regarding grasping and exploiting new scientific concepts and methods across multiple teams.

  • Partner with cross-functional partners to drive high-speed innovation

  • Embrace diversity of thought, background and experience to deliver innovative solutions.

  • Possess strong communication (oral, written), organizational, and leadership skills.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in biology or other scientific area with at least 5 years of post-PhD/post training (i.e. postdoctoral) experience, particularly practical experience with cell biology and cell imaging.

Additional Skills/Preferences:

  • The ideal candidate will possess a solid understanding of nucleic acid biology and nucleic acid therapeutics, especially related to mRNA and/or DNA editing.

  • Demonstrated track record for publication and presentation of research results.

  • Previous management experience

  • Good interpersonal skills and a sustained tendency for collaboration

  • Demonstrated initiative and appropriate risk-taking

  • Demonstrated technical proficiency and ability to create ideas for future work plans

  • Strong technical skills to supply business value

  • Knowledge and experience with management of a technical project

  • Ability to prioritize multiple activities and manage ambiguity
