Lilly Principal Research Scientist-Computational Sciences Lead in Cambridge, Massachusetts

At Lilly, we unite caring with discovery to make life better for people around the world. We are a global healthcare leader headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. Our 35,000 employees around the world work to discover and bring life-changing medicines to those who need them, improve the understanding and management of disease, and give back to our communities through philanthropy and volunteerism. We give our best effort to our work, and we put people first. We’re looking for people who are determined to make life better for people around the world.

We serve an extraordinary purpose. For more than 140 years, we have worked diligently to discover medicines that make life better. These discoveries start in Lilly Research Laboratories, where our scientists work to create new medicines that will help solve our world’s greatest health challenges.

At the Lilly Innovation Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, we explore how next generation therapeutics, new technologies, data analytics and new care models can improve patient health and the healthcare system. Our team, the Novel Therapeutic Modalities (NTM), shares a real passion for challenging conventional wisdom and creating an environment that embraces creative, break-through concepts. The Center offers a start-up environment with large company support. It is located in the heart of Massachusetts’ exploding science and technology cluster and is within walking distance of some of the best academic and industry innovators in the world.

Do you have deep domain experience with innovative computational tools, especially data science, statistics, informatics, and/or structure prediction (RNA and/or biomaterials)? We want you part of our team!

As the head of computational sciences of the New Therapeutic Modalities team in Cambridge, you will:

  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise a team of data scientists, statisticians, and molecular modelers

  • Develop and test hypotheses for improving RNA therapeutics (both APIs and drug products) in a multi-disciplinary team of biomedical engineers, biomaterials and oligonucleotide chemists, and molecular biologists

  • Establish best methodologies and guidelines for scientific data and guide rational, hypothesis-driven discovery of novel RNAs (e.g., small-activating RNA and RNA editing) and biomaterials (e.g., lipid nanoparticles, polymeric nanoparticles)

  • Collaborate with Therapeutic Areas (e.g., neuroscience, immunology) to identify key RNA therapeutic needs and lead projects related to these areas

  • Ensure smooth integration between experiment (e.g., NTM biomedical engineers and molecular biologists) and computation (e.g., bioinformatics, research informatics) across geographies

  • Identify new areas and strategies for new technology development in RNA-based therapies

  • Coordinate and lead collaborations with both internal and external partners

Basic Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Computational Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering or related scientific field with demonstrated knowledge of RNA therapeutics, API and/or drug product

  • 5+ years of relevant industry experience

Additional Skills:

  • Creative problem solver able to draw conclusions from complex datasets and present them in a clear and understandable way
