Our New Therapeutic Modalities (NTM) team is an innovation-focused group working to identify, develop and apply cutting-edge technologies to deliver maximum benefit to our patients. Our agile and diverse team strives to operate as an autonomous ‘biotech-like’ company within the walls of Lilly.

We are looking for a creative and collaborative scientist with expertise in the conception and investigation of emerging nucleic acid delivery approaches. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of the current state-of-the-art delivery strategies and will actively seek out the expertise of scientific leaders across and beyond Lilly. The candidate will draw on that knowledge, as well as background in nucleic acid biology and biomaterials, to contribute to a multidisciplinary team at the front edge of innovation.

In this role, the engineer will be exposed to the full breadth of preclinical and clinical drug discovery at Lilly and will provide opportunities to contribute to the development of breakthrough medicines. Therefore, the candidate must demonstrate a history of strong technical depth, scientific leadership, and scientific communication. The candidate should embrace a highly collaborative, team-based approach to scientific work.

Key responsibilities

  • Optimize and drive innovation in nucleic acid drug delivery platforms

  • Serve as a member of integrated team responsible for the discovery of nucleic acid-based therapies.

  • Communicate appropriately to other functions to enable fast implementation of drug delivery platforms for nucleic acid-based therapies.

  • Communicate to management team to enable / accelerate business decisions.

  • Engage in a highly collaborative work environment across and beyond NTM and Lilly, including external academic researchers and pre-competitive collaborations.

  • Direct and mentor less experienced scientists and engineers to deliver the portfolio and innovation projects.

  • Publish and present original research externally, author internal technical documents.

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related fields.

Additional Skills/Preferences:

  • Expertise in nanomedicines and delivery approaches

  • Proven experience in areas relevant to nucleic acid drug delivery including tissue-specific delivery, cellular uptake mechanisms, encapsulation and self-assembly processes, and emerging technologies (e.g., exosomes)

  • Prior experience with novel drug delivery systems like lipid nanoparticles, polymeric nanoparticles, exosomes, etc.

  • Capable of performing process development and optimization of drug products

  • Ability to take initiative and work without oversight

  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative research environment

  • Excellent oral communication and documentation skills.
