Lilly Research Scientist-Cell Biology-Neurodegeneration in Cambridge, Massachusetts

Job Category:

Science

Type of Employment:

Full-Time Employment - FTE

Responsibilities:

Eli Lilly has a proud record of drug discovery and development for Alzheimer’s Disease with a highly competitive portfolio of industry leading assets. We are now seeking a highly motivated scientist to join the Neurodegeneration team to facilitate its mission of discovering novel medicines for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and other related neurodegenerative conditions.

As part of our Proteostasis Group, which is part of the larger Neurodegeneration division, you will contribute to driving experimental programs to develop new therapeutics for neurodegenerative diseases. Do you have the confidence to drive your own research while contributing to the broader team?

We are looking for a passionate teammate who has a strong knowledge of the cellular biology of neurodegenerative disease and/or protein degradation pathways. Expertise in human iPSC culture, in particular differentiation of iPSCs into neurons is beneficial, as is knowledge of cellular imaging and biochemical techniques, ideally related to tau/misfolded proteins or protein degradation mechanisms.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Design and implement a program of work to support efficient progression of in vitro projects addressing key molecular mechanisms and testing new chemical entities. Working independently to troubleshoot and drive forward an experimental program.

  • Developing new areas of research, novel approaches, targets and techniques to help Lilly expand its capabilities in neurodegenerative disease.

  • Maintenance and manipulation of human iPSC cells, differentiation into neurons and performing biochemical, imaging or functional assays in these cells.

  • Working with other cell systems, for example primary neuronal culture or immortalised cell lines and manipulations of these cells (e.g. viral transfection, siRNA knock-down, genetic manipulation, co-culture) to increase target validation for various molecular pathways.

  • Measurement of biochemical or functional parameters in cells using techniques including microscopy, live fluorescence imaging, immunocytochemistry, calcium imaging, morphology, live/dead cell assays.

  • Performing assays that might include: AlphaScreen, ELISA, MSD, SDS-PAGE, WB , FACS.

  • Provide written and verbal communication of work to internal and external collaborators.

  • Accurate recording of all practical work: completion of electronic lab notebook to Lilly procedure quality standards;

  • Maintaining high laboratory standards with regard to quality and safety.

Basic Qualificiations:

  • PhD in a neuroscience-related or similar discipline

Additional Skills/Preferences:

  • Strong background in neuronal cell culture as well as assay development.

  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team-orientated environment.

  • Ability to multi-task and efficiently handle varied experiments while maintaining quality results and attention to detail.

  • Ability to review literature and rapidly prepare and analyse data for presentation at team, group, departmental meetings.

  • Good knowledge of genetics and common molecular mechanisms contributing to neurodegeneration.

  • Experience with leading drug/scientific discovery teams would be an advantage

  • Ability to prepare and present data at external meetings, experience and track record of presenting and/or publication of data.
