Lilly’s Connected Care and Insulins team is focused on bringing next generation therapeutic ecosystems to people using insulin that have the potential to provide breakthrough outcomes and significantly reduce the daily burden of diabetes management. Our product development team shares a passion for challenging conventional wisdom and creating an environment that embraces prioritizing high-risk, breakthrough concepts. We have team members located at both Lilly’s corporate headquarters in Indianapolis, IN and at Lilly’s innovation center in Cambridge, MA.

The Connected Care Algorithm Innovation Product Development Sr. Director is responsible for ensuring the system requirements of algorithm innovation platform meet the needs of Lilly’s business requirements, for solidifying a product roadmap that achieves Lilly’s breakthrough outcomes goals, leading simulations, innovation platforms and algorithms development, and overseeing the product development execution efforts across Lilly’s collaborators and internal teams. This position will work closely with Lilly’s pump CGM and Pen teams and collaborators, Lilly’s insulin and software/hardware medical device teams on all development activities required for regulatory clearance and market access. The Algorithm Product Development Sr. Director will partner with the commercial team to ensure continuity between commercial and development priorities. This leader must have a deep understanding of diabetes algorithms development with demonstrated success working within a highly matrixed environment. Specific experience with control and system engineering is desired as well as with CGM and insulin pump technology. The leader should understand and appreciate the regulated environment of combination products, digital, device and drug development and commercialization, including but not limited to current US. This role reports to the Connected Care Innovation Platform Leader.

Responsibilities:

  • Effectively executes on the deliverables as outlined in the integrated algorithm development plan.

  • Work closely with the connected care commercial insulins and algorithm development teams bringing the technical expertise on system controls.

  • Leading algorithm development, simulation, and translation with cross functional teams

  • Lead the alignment between asset strategy and development plan and execution.

  • Provide and coordinate design and process technical expertise: technical merit, technical resources, and IP.

  • Enhance Lilly’s competitive advantage through development of proprietary knowledge.

  • May represent department or company in interactions with internal and external committees or regulators, presentations, publications or other professional activities.

  • Actively participates in the Innovation Platform Lead Team with key internal functions and Lilly’s pump and CGM collaborations.

  • Proactively identification of program risks and development of effective mitigation plans.

  • Participate in formal design reviews, risk assessment, and root cause analysis.

  • Responsible for annual business planning for global development team activities.

  • Direct supervision for project and product management.

  • Communication Plan: Develop and implement a team communication plan to ensure alignment with asset strategy.

  • Provide immediate and accurate communication of key decisions/results that have team, asset, and/or organizational impact. Work with corporate affairs and investor relations to manage communication about the asset outside of the company.

  • Portfolio Alignment: Lead delivery of a plan that is in alignment with corporate portfolio, BU priorities, and the approved asset scope.

  • Cost Management: Drive development of an integrated project budget that aligns team, functional, and geographic resources (FTE’s and Direct/Indirect expense and Capital) always keeping a minimum of 8 quarters in planning horizon. Represent expected cost variability with the project budget compared to both business plan and milestone to milestone plan.

  • Risk Management: Owns risk management plan for the team. Accountable for full disclosure of risks to management and approved actions to mitigate/eliminate the risks.

Basic Requirements:

  • Minimum of a four-year degree - Bachelor’s, preferably in a health-related, scientific, or engineering field

  • 5+ years of diabetes medical device development experience, including both software and/or hardware systems and control

Additional Preferences:

  • Advanced degree, for example, MD, PhD, Pharm D, MBA, MPH, or MS

  • Product development experience in the US market with insulin pumps and/or closed loop systems

  • Control and /or system engineering experience

  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to influence others

  • Good knowledge of SaMD

  • In-depth hands-on knowledge of Agile methodologies and principles in a medical device or comparable regulated environment

  • Excellent communication skills across all levels of the system of delivery, ensuring clear alignment on the business strategy and customer requirements

  • Demonstrated experience with project management tools and processes for scope, schedule, cost, communications, and risk management.

  • Demonstrated experience in leading virtual project teams.

  • Demonstrated experience performing project leadership and management for an integrated cross-functional project across cultures and geographies.

  • Experience developing and/or supporting Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) solutions.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of the healthcare infrastructure and regulations relevant for medical health, cloud-based solutions
