The Synthetic Molecule Design and Development (SMDD) organization at Eli Lilly and Company has an exciting opportunity for an innovative synthetic peptide chemist to join our process development organization! You will have the opportunity to join a highly dynamic and cross-functional department pursuing sustainable synthetic peptide development and commercialization. Our peptide group has recently commercialized Mounjaro/Zepbound, which is only one of the many exciting peptides we have in our portfolio, and you will be able to contribute to enabling new sustainable approaches to these synthetic peptides. Top candidates for this position will:

  • Enable the design, development, and implementation of sustainable, innovative processes for the synthesis of complex peptides.

  • Adopt green chemistry and engineering as a means of effecting a paradigm shift to reduce the environmental footprint in the synthetic peptide field: Synthetic Peptide Sustainability Challenges (https://pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10.1021/acs.joc.8b03001) .

  • Show proficiency in various modes of peptide synthesis including Solid Phase Peptide Synthesis, Liquid Phase Peptide Synthesis, Semi-Synthesis, and Enzymatic approaches: Mounjaro Hybrid Synthesis (https://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acs.oprd.1c00108) .

  • Have familiarity with chromatography, mass spectrometry, optical spectroscopy, and peptide automation.

  • Have strong technical problem-solving ability and have an internal motivation to succeed in team environments.

  • Present research findings at conferences and publish in high quality peer-reviewed journals.

Position Responsibilities:

The peptide team is responsible for sustainably enabling the synthesis and commercialization of a variety of synthetically challenging therapeutic peptides. A successful applicant will have experience with peptide synthesis, optimization, and isolation. Primary responsibilities are to:

  • Identify ground-breaking peptide technologies as well as trends in sustainable synthetic peptide chemistry, chemical engineering, and continuous manufacturing.

  • Identify and exploit new scientific concepts, display strong problem-solving skills, and be self-motivated.

  • Engage with Eli Lilly’s Development and Manufacturing organizations to develop a deep understanding of new initiatives and improve existing scientific processes.

  • Present research findings at internal forms as well as external conferences.

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in Chemistry or related field

OR

  • MS in Chemistry or related field with 7+ years of relevant experience

Additional Skills/Preferences:

  • Proficient in English

  • Familiarity with small molecules and synthetic methods

  • Familiarity with reversed phase chromatography, ion exchange chromatography, size exclusion chromatography, chiral chromatography

  • Hands-on experience with high-resolution mass spectrometry in the characterization of synthetic peptides and experience with MS data interpretation

  • Ability to learn and apply technical knowledge to meet changing project needs

  • Flexibility and ability to prioritize work to meet interpersonal and scientific goals

  • Good interpersonal skills and a sustained tendency for collaborations
