The Process Engineering Center (PEC) is a group of skilled engineering practitioners who possess deep technical expertise and have access to appropriate lab facilities. The PEC partners with plant engineers, site process engineers, Global Facility Delivery engineers, development engineers, HSE resources and scientists to provide rigorous technical solutions.

This role is a very technical role requiring knowledge of the environmental regulations as well as ability to design, model, and deliver Environmental Control Systems related to air emissions.

Key attributes include the following: Technical contributions based on first principles, delivering technical solutions with significant business impact across the site/network, influencing leadership through technical input across the API and Parenteral networks, improving engineering practices, seeking external perspective to solicit best practices, and mentoring/coaching site resources.

Key Objectives/Deliverables:

This position focuses on the many technical aspects related to the design, modeling, installation, construction, testing and maintenance of environmental control systems (ECS) at Lilly facilities. Environmental control systems could include air emissions control systems (thermal oxidizers, cryogenic condensors), and other pollution control technologies (scrubbers, adsorption media). Fundamental knowledge of material and energy balances, chemistry, thermodynamics, fluid flow and mass transfer is required.

Creates and maintains models in:

  • ASPEN Batch Plus Developer



  • Emissions Master.

Also performs calculations in:

  • ASHRAE manual rooftop dispersion

  • Air Toxic Assessments

  • LEL Evaluations

  • Pharma MACT

  • Provide modeling capabilities to aid in design or troubleshooting or necessary quantification of various parameters/pollutants; modeling examples include fluid flow, batch or steady-state process simulation, dispersion modeling, etc.

  • Provides technical consultation to sites to support major capital projects for new ECS projects or major upgrades to existing ECS.

  • Assists sites globally with ECS technical evaluations, master planning, technology assessments, performance, air emissions testing programs, pollutant generation estimation, and specific problem resolution including troubleshooting and root cause analysis.

  • Understand external codes, reglations and standards that apply to Lilly facilities and provide technical support to Lilly environmental regulatory personnel in the influence of changes in these regulations, codes and standards. Provide technical expertise to help ensure compliance with applicable regulations, codes, and standards.

Basic Requirements:

  • BS in Engineering (Chemical or Environmental preferred)

  • Minimum 6 years working with environmental pollution control systems (design, construction, operation, testing, maintenance) in pharmaceutical manufacturing or the oil and gas industry

Additional Skills/Preferences:

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills

  • Strong problem-solving skills

  • Successful candidate will frequently work independently and, as such, must be a self-starter and capable of working with little direction

  • PE desired, but not required

  • Knowledge application of Pharma MACT equations

  • Demonstrated ability to create and maintain models in ASPEN, AERMOD, CALPUFF, or Emissions Master

Additional Information:

  • Domestic (including Puerto Rico) and international travel may be required (10-20%)
