Lilly’s Synthetic Molecule Design and Development (SMDD) team is involved in key development activities from pre-clinical phases through commercialization of drug substances and drug products for small molecules, synthetic oligonucleotides and peptides. Our scientists develop key technical and business solutions across the portfolio using their deep technical expertise to speed up testing of the clinical hypothesis and overall drug development. SMDD is seeking outstanding automation engineering candidates to work within the process design and development teams. The position presents an opportunity to work side by side with formulation scientists and engineers to support new technical solutions to accelerate our portfolio and provide automation support of the SMDD pilot plant. The position will be based in Indianapolis where research is conducted in a new, state of the art development facility.

Responsibilities

Candidates must demonstrate strong technical/automation depth and a willingness to promote a collaborative, team-based approach to problem solving. The responsibilities for this role include:

  • Provide automation technical support for the various pilot plant platforms and process information system (e.g. data historians).

  • Provide a high-level of data mining and analysis for process understanding and troubleshooting.

  • Design and implement automation related changes for the various pilot plant platforms.

  • Perform system support activities (e.g. system backups, performance monitoring, password maintenance, remote connections, etc.)

  • Automation design and delivery of new process units, particularly in support of continuous manufacturing initiatives in the pilot plant through the installation of next generation continuous manufacturing platforms, such as continuous encapsulation and continuous roller compaction.

  • Provide project management and technical leadership to projects.

  • Oversight of contractors and vendors assisting in the delivery of automation solutions.

  • Foster an inclusive environment by promoting diverse thought and shared experience to deliver innovative solutions that address unmet technical needs.

Basic Requirements:

  • BS in engineering or related field.

  • 3+ years' experience in process automation engineering and data integration (e.g. data historians, data analytics, visualization, MES integration, enterprise level applications and security).

Additional Skills/Preferences:

  • Knowledge of system integration, data integration, databases, enterprise systems, process automation systems, and process historians

  • Core knowledge related to S95 and S88 principles and IT/Automation integration.

  • Proficiency in project management.

  • Experience in pharmaceutical or similar GMP industry.

  • Experience in Lilly’s preferred platforms, including Rockwell Automation and Emerson DeltaV.

  • Experience in OSI PI Data Historians

  • Excellent verbal communication and documentation skills.

  • Demonstrate ability to effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.

  • Demonstrate leadership behaviors with ability to accept challenges, seek opportunities to remove barriers, influence without authority, and lead in areas of uncertainty.

  • Demonstrate outstanding teamwork/interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrate problem solving, attention to detail and result oriented behaviors in a fast-paced environment.
