Global Process Automation & Control Engineering (GPACE) is part of the Lilly’s Corporate Engineering Tech Center (ETC). GPACE provides automation solutions through measurements, control, control systems, data and integration, and project delivery. GPACE is a technical resource for training, standards, and stewards of Lilly’s primary automation platforms. GPACE’s primary customers are global manufacturing, development, and Global Facilities Delivery (GFD).

The Instrument and Control Engineer role requires a depth of understanding of both process measurements and control theory to generate value through the design, application, and troubleshooting within our manufacturing and development sites, as well as capital projects. Must understand process systems adequately to be capable of troubleshooting and identifying opportunities for improvement, specifically in the instrumentation and control focus areas. Documents and communicates successes and failures resulting from work in the measurement and control space. This position will guide the discipline and lead global initiatives on both proven and innovative measurement and control technologies and techniques.

This role will provide discipline leadership in technology development, knowledge sharing, mentoring of junior talent, as well as provide technical leadership to sites, support major project delivery, and network with the external community at large. This role will also influence standard instrumentation specifications used to select and deliver instrumentation for new projects across Lilly manufacturing.

Key Objectives/Deliverables

Work safely and continually look for improvements to both people and equipment safety. Ensure safety is incorporate into process automation design. Instrumentation Design – Provide support to manufacturing sites and Global Facilities Delivery during project profiling and design. Ensure project design meets intended requirements, considers life cycle cost, and eliminates non-value add complexity. Use replication and best practices to optimize project cost.

Instrument Delivery Strategy – Provide project teams instrument subject matter expertise to define delivery strategies with A&E firms including processes for specifications, receipt verification, procurement plans, and calibration programs.

Automation/Control Discipline and Technical Leadership – Partner with Lilly technical experts to lead the discipline through solution assessment, reuse, and development. Manage tools, engineering standards, master specifications and best practices.

Knowledge Sharing – Provide technical coaching and mentoring to other Lilly engineers. Document learning through peer-reviewed technical reports. Facilitate shared learning forums such as conferences and user groups. Facilitate standards and best practices application to capital projects. Optimization and Control – Increase the benefits of automation and control solutions while driving life-cycle costs down. Assist manufacturing sites globally with technical planning, technology assessments, process control troubleshooting, and root cause analysis

External Influence and Benchmarking - Monitor and influence, when appropriate, changes in external codes and standards on Lilly’s behalf, and work to ensure ongoing compliance within Lilly. Extract benchmarking information from academia and industry.

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or a related science field.

  • Minimum 3 years' experience in Instrument Engineering

Additional Preferences:

  • Experience working with validated systems in a pharmaceutical environment.

  • Experience in project delivery and major capital projects.

  • Experience working with process automation and data platforms.

Additional Information:

  • This position will be based in Indianapolis, Indiana but will be expected to support projects and sites globally. In some instances, extended travel (both US and International) may be required.

  • 8-hour days - Monday through Friday, overtime and some weekend/holiday may be required for project support.

  • Travel: Domestic and International travel may be required (10-50%).

  • Location: Indianapolis, Indiana. LTC-South Engineering Tech Center.
