One key aspect of this this is the Lilly Bioethics Program which drives the integration of bioethics principles into our standards, decisions, and actions in all stages of research, development, and commercialization. The goals of the program are 1) to create a sustainable capability and capacity to implement the company’s bioethics standards, 2) to advance Lilly’s reputation in the bioethics arena, and 3) to integrate bioethics with business ethics initiatives to foster the culture of ethics across the company. Members of the bioethics team engage in four core activities: developing the company’s positions on key bioethics topics, consulting on specific bioethics challenges, educating and training, and collaborating on internal and external projects.
The Bioethics Consultant serves as the subject matter expert for the Lilly Bioethics Program. The Consultant needs to employ a deep understanding of the bioethics literature, professional and industry guidance, current events, and pharmaceutical industry activity and positions. Specific responsibilities include:
Lead consultations and serve on bioethics advisory committee as bioethics subject matter expert
Lead development of company bioethics positions
Actively monitor external environment to stay current on bioethics issues impacting the industry or company
Develop and lead bioethics education, training, and outreach programs
Conduct research, provide background materials, and lead topical discussions as needed for the Bioethics Advisory Committee (BEAC)
Develop and maintain communication plan including website, outreach, periodic updates, and events (e.g. Bioethics Lecture)
Initiate periodic industry benchmarking and drive changes from learnings
Develop and implement methodology (e.g. surveys, metrics) to assess the impact and opportunities for improvement of the bioethics program
Contribute to external bioethics collaborations, publications, and presentations
Develop bioethics content for internal and external communications (e.g. Lilly ESG Report, LillyNow, Investor Relations, Corporate Communications)
Advanced degree in bioethics, philosophy, or science related field
At least 3 years of experience in Bioethics or 5 years of experience in pharmaceutical research and development
Advanced degree in Bioethics or related field (e.g. MBE, MS, PhD)
Direct experience in pharmaceutical research, development, and commercialization
Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills
Excellent interpersonal skills
Demonstrated ability to develop and teach education and training programs
Knowledge of external guidelines, regulations, and public policy related to research and development and healthcare ethics
Ability to understand the interplay between bioethics and business issues and impact on diverse parts of the business
