Responsibilities

The candidate selected as Director of Communications, Lilly Diabetes, will lead global communications support for key product areas in Lilly’s diabetes business. Oversight will include traditional and non-traditional communications supporting Lilly’s broad and growing portfolio and pipeline of diabetes medications including our incretin portfolio, connected care and insulins, nasal glucagon and our alliance partnership. The position includes communications management of product launches, key data releases, critical consumer programs as well as key policy issues such as affordability and access.

The position will report to the Senior Director of Corporate Affairs for Lilly Diabetes. The Director of Communications will lead a talented team of four individuals who provide product-specific communications support. The leader will work with U.S. and global business colleagues in Lilly Diabetes as well as with cross-functional colleagues in Corporate Communications, Executive Communications, Digital and Social Media Communications, Employee Communications, Investor Relations and Global Corporate Affairs. The leader must approach the work with a “Team Lilly” mindset – i.e, supporting the diabetes business while keeping other interests and stakeholders in mind.

Specific oversight responsibilities include:

  • Communications support around key data and regulatory milestones for new pipeline assets as well as new indications and line extensions for best-in-class products.

  • Lead environment shaping communications efforts to help support strong launches of our new molecules.

  • Communications support for our Incretin, Connected Care and established insulin franchises – including key policy issues around access and affordability to our insulins.

  • Communications support for several consumer-facing programs such as the Leonard Prize Award celebrating the 100-year anniversary of the discovery of insulin.

  • Outreach with the Diabetes On-Line Community (DOC) while partnering with communications colleagues to ensure our franchise is being represented in our communications with that influential audience.

  • Media training, communications counsel and coaching to internal business partners.

  • Manage day-to-day work with PR agencies that support our work.

  • Anticipate, prioritize, and prepare to manage possible negative issues in the media.

  • Develop and edit communications for media use such as press releases, internal Q&As, videos and fact sheets.

  • Develop and edit communications for internal use (executive communications, videos, emails, speeches, town halls, etc.).

  • Conduct and/or facilitate interviews with local, national and international media outlets

  • Partner with communications contacts in our global affiliates

  • Assist with other communications projects as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or a related field

  • 10-15 years of communications experience (communication roles, public relations, etc.) with a strong understanding of both traditional and social media and a vision for new innovative ways of communicating.

  • Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to be employed in the United States. Lilly does not anticipate providing sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B or TN status) for this employment position.

Additional Skills/Preferences

  • Demonstrated experience in the development and execution of strategic and creative communications plans, including digital and social media

  • Experience successfully working with cross-functional teams, including collaboration and consensus building

  • Demonstrated influence with business partners

  • Project management experience

  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, including interactions with senior leaders

  • Experience in media relations, including interacting with A-list media and serving as a spokesperson

  • PR agency management experience

  • Experience in executive communications/speechwriting

  • Ability to manage issues/crises; ability to handle stress

  • Creative communications skills – written and verbal, as well as interpersonal

  • Ability to understand the business need and use communication to drive the business forward

Additional Information

  • Travel: domestic and some international travel required (estimate of 10%)

  • Location: Indianapolis-preferred.
