Lilly Director / Sr. Director - Biotechnology Discovery Research Lead Optimization in Indianapolis, Indiana

The Biotechnology Discovery Research Lead Optimization (BioTDR-LO) group at Lilly’s Technology Center in Indianapolis advances medicines that address significant unmet needs by integrating biology with innovative scientific capabilities in biomolecule design. We collaborate with colleagues across Lilly, including scientists in biomolecule discovery, engineering, and computational sciences, Therapeutic Area biology, ADME, Toxicology, PK/PD, Statistics, Clinical Development, and more. Our team is looking for a motivated technical leader with deep expertise in biomolecule design/optimization and broad knowledge of drug development to join us and make a difference for the patients and communities we serve! The successful candidate will lead efforts to design and optimize protein therapeutics balancing desired biological function with manufacturability in a dynamic research environment.
Responsibilities:
Provide exceptional scientific and operational leadership to overcome barriers and drive projects and platforms forward with speed and quality.
Partner closely with colleagues across Lilly, including other groups in BioTDR, Medicines Innovation Hub, ADME/Toxicology/PKPD, and therapeutic areas. Ensure teams work together effectively across boundaries. Represent BioTDR on select cross-functional initiatives.
Supervise and mentor senior scientists and research associates and ensure rigorous performance management practices. Coach, mentor, and develop talent more broadly.
Innovate to improve core technologies and build next-generation capabilities
Actively engage with the broader scientific community by reading scientific and trade literature, attending/presenting at meetings and conferences, and authoring original research publications. Identify, champion, and deliver opportunities to create value from the external environment.
Basic Qualifications:
Ph.D. in biochemistry, biophysics, (structural) biology or related field
7+ years biologics research and development experience in pharmaceutical and/or biotechnology companies
Additional Skills/Preferences:
10+ years of relevant experience with 7+ years of supervisory experience
Experience with design and characterization of protein-small molecule conjugates
Demonstrated ability to grasp and lead in a breadth of scientific areas spanning molecule biology, purification, biophysical and bioanalytical characterization of biomolecules
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills are essential
Proven ability to navigate complex business and technical issues and ensure timely delivery
Proven track record of developing innovative solutions and driving continuous improvement
