Eli Lilly & Company’s Biotechnology Discovery Research organization is responsible for discovering and optimizing novel biotherapeutic (oligonucleotides, proteins, peptides, antibodies) medicines for advancement into clinical research. Key areas of unmet medical need we focus on include diabetes, oncology, immunology, neuroscience, and others. A crucial component for success is enabling the generation of drug candidates containing biopharmaceutical properties that ensure successful manufacturing, formulation, and drug delivery.

The ideal candidate will:

  • use hands-on polymer synthesis experience for delivery of biologics/nucleic acids

  • employ conjugation chemistry expertise of polymer/lipid to ligands (SM, peptides, etc.)

  • develop, optimize, and scale analytical methods and high throughput assays aimed at identifying and prioritizing the right molecule(s) with the desired properties to enable successful pre-clinical and clinical development

  • manage formulation development and analytical characterization of diverse biotherapeutic molecules to enable preclinical assessment in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo using multiple models with minimal direction

  • have significant hands-on experience using multiple instruments including HPLC/UPLC, SEC, UV/VIS spectrometer, fluorescence spectrometer, analytical ultracentrifuge, NMR, FT-IR, static/dynamic light scattering, electron microscopes (AFM, SEM, TEM), DSC, viscosity

  • design and execute experimental studies with critical attention to details; collect, interpret, summarize, and present the results in project meetings and other forums; document all outcomes in electronic notebooks following established procedures

  • review external literature to identify and evaluate areas of innovation to accelerate the delivery of critical breakthroughs and achieve positive impact on project outcome

Basic Requirements:

B.S.or M.S. degree in chemical engineering, organic chemistry, biochemistry, chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, with a minimum of 3 years (for MS) and 5 years (for BS) of relevant work experience

Additional Skills/Preferences:

  • Concepts of active targeting in drug delivery

  • Analytical characterization, cell culture, etc.

  • Hands-on experience working with formulation development (particles, hydrogels, etc) and analytical characterization of biotherapeutic molecules like peptides, peptide-nucleic acid conjugates, biopolymers, sugars, and bioconjugates

  • Demonstrated success in working independently and as part of a large cross-functional team

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills vital to establish productive collaborative relationships to deliver project results on time

  • Agility to learn and implement new technical skills to address research challenges or fill critical knowledge gaps

  • Flexibility to prioritize as project/platform objectives evolve
