Are you looking to make a significant difference by contributing to the development of novel analgesics that would improve the lives of millions of chronic pain sufferers?
We are seeking an ambitious post-doctoral scientist with strong research and communication skills to contribute to high visibility research projects in the Pain Research Group. Your work will contribute to the understanding of novel spinal mechanisms that underlie sexual dimorphism in chronic pain. Recent preclinical studies in rodents have identified sexual dimorphism in the neuroimmune mechanisms that initiate and maintain hyperexcitability in the spinal dorsal horn (SDH) after peripheral nerve injury. This proposal will build upon these learnings to identify novel translatable mechanisms of spinal hyperexcitability in donor spinal cord tissue. Through modulating specific molecular processes in defined spinal circuitry, your research may determine targets required for SDH hyperexcitability in both sexes which may lead to more effective clinical analgesics for the treatment of chronic pain.
In this role, you will:
Discover novel biology and build translatable assays to validate human pain pathways
Collaborate with academic experts in the field of spinal pain biology
Be part of an experienced drug discovery team comprising scientists from many areas of research and development
Identify key research gaps and champion creative solutions to address those gaps
Maintain external awareness and learning to benefit the organization
Present findings at conferences and publish in high quality peer-reviewed journals
PhD in Neuroscience or life science related field
Strong background in pain biology
Published work using protein biochemistry methods in tissue
This position is not permanent. It is for a fixed duration of 2 years with potential to extend to 3 years and for maximum of up to 4 years. You will have opportunities to apply for full time positions after your duration is complete.

If you are described with these skills, you could be a great fit for the role:
Experienced with tissue imaging using immunohistochemistry and/or calcium-sensitive dye indicators
Prior work or knowledge of preclinical in vivo pain models
Electrophysiology experience desirable but not necessary
Self-directed and highly motivated individual who wants to learn new techniques while continually pursuing research and publication goals
Excellent communicator (oral and written) with presentation experience, along with a strong publication record
Proficient in data analysis and reporting (PRISM, Excel, PowerPoint, Photoshop, Spotfire, etc.)
About Eli Lilly’s Postdoctoral Scientist Program
When it comes to research and development, our goal is to discover and deliver innovative medicines that make life better for people around the world. It is challenging, expensive and often filled with setbacks. But even when we fail, we advance medical science and understanding by learning more about diseases, biology, and chemistry – ultimately bringing new solutions one step closer to reality.
Over the course of our history, we have shed light on some of the toughest health care problems known to man – diabetes, heart disease, infectious diseases, neuroscience disorders, cancer and more. We could not pursue this without our research and development team.
Postdoctoral scientists help us continue this pursuit. During your experience you will get:
Top industry research experience
Mentoring by some of Lilly’s top scientists
Laboratory and classroom training and education to further your development
Collaboration and networking across dozens of postdoctoral scientists and other researchers
