Position Title : Principal Engineer - Automation
Global Process Automation & Control Engineering (GPACE) is part of the Engineering Tech Center (ETC). GPACE provides automation solutions thru measurements, control, control systems, data and integration, and project delivery. GPACE is a technical resource for training, standards, and Lilly’s standard automation platforms. GPACE’s primary customers are global manufacturing, development sites, manufacturing MQIT, Global Quality, and Global Facilities Delivery (GFD).
This specific role is a mid to senior level engineering role which requires a 4-year engineering degree, preferably in Chemical, Electrical, Computer, or Mechanical Engineering, in addition to 5+ years experience in process control engineering. This role provides broad design expertise and project engineering through an extensive network across the automation discipline. Influences throughout the organization. Successfully directs programs involving multiple groups, projects, or locations. Mentors other engineers in automation engineering capability and career development.
This role will be expected to have a strong first principles foundation, and routinely apply engineering judgment and first principles rigor to the engineering problems encountered during projects. Expertise with Rockwell Automation is preferred.
This specific role requires expertise in the knowledge of automation engineering and project delivery with an emphasis on leading automation design and delivery on capital projects and effectively organizing and managing project teams. In addition this will role will work to optimize and improve project/process automation engineering approaches by combining technical expertise, best practices, engineering standards, and project delivery expertise.
Safety – Work safely and continually look for improvements in personnel and equipment safety, ensure safe design and operation of new equipment, ensure automation design reflects safety concerns for operations and maintenance.
Automation/Control Discipline and Technical Leadership – Partner with colleagues to lead the discipline through solution assessment, replication, and development. Manage tools, engineering standards, master specifications and best practices. Provide technical coaching and consultation to other Lilly engineers and facilitate shared learning forums.
Automation Design – Provide support to manufacturing sites and Global Facilities Delivery during project profiling and design. Ensure project design meets intended requirements, considers life cycle cost, and eliminates non-value add complexity. Use replication and best practices to optimize project cost.
Project Engineering – Lead automation design and delivery of Global and GFD projects. Provide appropriate levels of project execution support. Support the Design Delivery Gate Review process. Collaborate with GFD and outsource partners to ensure a successful Automation Project Management structure is implemented to deliver the project.
BS in engineering or science
Minimum 5 years’ experience in automation machine control, process control, or equivalent work experience in a related field.
Experience on Rockwell Automation platform
Knowledge of GMP’s and pharmaceutical manufacturing
Knowledge in other PLC platforms
Knowledge in machine control, data historians, and reporting systems
Significant experience and strong problem solving skills in measurements, control (process and/or manufacturing), control systems, integration and data.
Excellent verbal and written communications skills
Ability to manage contract resources and projects to deliver a common set of objectives
Ability to coordinate Automation and Process Control design across different cultures and countries.
Demonstrated ability to work safely
Demonstrated expertise in one or more automation platforms
Monday through Friday Day Shift of 7:30am to 4:00pm with flex time acceptable.
Location: LTC South, 170/2
Travel: Domestic and International travel required (<15%)
