Synthetic Molecule Design and Development (SMDD) is an innovation-focused organization in Eli Lilly and Company. Our dynamic group is made up of chemists, chemical engineers, analytical chemists, and pharmaceutical scientists. We strive to identify, develop and apply groundbreaking technologies to deliver maximum benefit to our patients. Within SMDD, chemistry and engineering are essential to establishing a robust and sustainable supply chain for small molecules as well as other synthetic molecules such as peptides, oligonucleotides and antibody-drug conjugates. We seek to use new technologies for key problems, and we endeavor to improve the way we develop and manufacture therapeutic molecules.

You will have the opportunity to collaborate across diverse scientific areas including chemical synthesis development, chemical engineering, analytical chemistry, as well as computational chemistry and emerging machine learning fields.
Top candidates for this position will be expected to:
Provide strategic oversight for HTE, automation and data informatics at Lilly
Provide critical evaluation of technology footprint to enable and deliver evaluation, development and execution of new scientific processes
Adaptation of manual processes to automated platforms, mapping existing process, implementing new technology and resolving areas of improvement.
Work with engineering and IT teams to enable integration of systems and deliver high quality hardware and software solutions for research.
Develop and create data platforms and experimental templates which align with HTE capabilities creating data streams for accelerating design and development of innovative synthetic technologies.
Command of scientific informatics and data visualization tools (e.g. StarDrop, TIBCO Spotfire, KNIME) to undertake computationally enabled multi-parameter optimization approaches.
Partner with the IDS organization to develop a sustainable data ecosystem which integrate within Lilly’s existing information infrastructures.
Aid in building and implementing an enterprise-wide strategy for integrating the fields of data sciences and automation to create innovative solutions and approaches to addressing key issues in development of pharmaceutical therapies.
Integrate in silico and computational chemistry and related chemoinformatic solutions into business workflows for synthetic molecule commercialization work.
Partner with similar SMDD capabilities in partner areas such as automated crystallization and salt screening to identify alignment and areas for collaboration especially data platforms.
Robust track record of scientific contributions including peer reviewed publications, patents and presentations and maintain presence scientific meetings, consortiums, etc.
Effectively communicate project(s) status, issues, and strategies to various management and collaborator groups.

PhD in Chemistry, Engineering, Informatics, Data Sciences and/or Computational Chemistry or related field
At least 3 years of data science experience
Demonstrated leadership capabilities especially in a team environment
Good interpersonal skills and a persistent tendency for collaboration; excellent ability to communicate and understand customer expectations
Demonstrated self-initiative and appropriate risk-taking
Sustained technical proficiency and integration of complex scientific concepts to create technical agendas that supply business value
Knowledge and experience with management of technical projects
Ability to prioritize multiple activities and manage ambiguity
An active scientific curiosity and interest for complementary subject areas within the pharmaceutical industry
Demonstrated success in persuasion and influence in a scientific setting
Proficiency in use of Excel, Spotfire and data analysis software and data visualization tools
Expertise with big data technologies (Azure/AWS) is preferred
Potential exposure to chemicals, allergens and loud noises
Travel: 0 to 10%
