The Lilly New Therapeutic Modalities Team is seeking an experienced and inspired scientific leader to join our fast-paced, interdisciplinary team as we leverage novel RNA/oligonucleotide based therapeutic modalities to enhance and advance the Lilly portfolio. The successful applicant will utilize their knowledge and technical expertise to complement and enable core capabilities of next generation oligonucleotides and RNA modalities, driving the discovery and development of RNA-based clinical candidates.
Key facets of the role are setting strategy and scientific direction for next generation of genetic therapies at Lilly, assembling and progressing an innovative preclinical portfolio with focus on scientific rigor, portfolio effectiveness, and building and maintaining state of the art expertise in oligonucleotide-based modalities, with an emphasis on innovative approaches with potential for breakthrough efficacy.
The New Therapeutic Modalities team strives to operate as a small, agile and autonomous ‘biotech-like’ company within the walls of Lilly. In the RNA Team, both basic and applied sciences are essential. We are looking for creative and energetic problem solvers to work in a multidisciplinary team across the breadth of the Lilly organization to achieve the company’s objectives for future pipeline growth and value for the patient.
Provide leadership on approaches to improve mechanistic understanding of RNA/oligonucleotide-based therapeutics
Lead efforts in the design and discovery of innovative oligonucleotide chemistries and conjugations to small molecules, peptides or monoclonal antibodies that will enable tissue selective delivery
Provide scientific direction and leadership on novel delivery system(s) and vehicles for RNA therapeutics
Leverages diverse cross-functional and external network to enhance innovation and break-through thinking in research and development of oligonucleotide therapeutics
Embrace diversity of thought, background and experience to deliver innovative solutions in the face of ambiguity
Work with cross-functional project teams providing scientific updates, and project management support required to achieve pre-clinical and clinical development goals and timelines.
Maintain a high scientific profile for the group by encouraging participation in scientific exchange, publications and presentations.
Manage, coach and develop direct reports and team members
Provide leadership to solve remaining research and development challenges in oligonucleotide space by delivering innovative solutions that expedite drug discovery and bring value for the patient
Identify, sponsor and accelerate development of talent across the enterprise
- PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry or relevant scientific discipline with a minimum of 15-years experience in the pharmaceutical or related industry in the area of oligonucleotide-based chemistry and therapeutics
Travel: 0 to 30%
Position: Boston or Indianapolis, IN; Lilly Corporate Center (LCC)
Proven experience in design and discovery of RNA based therapeutics.
Demonstrated knowledge of Pharmaceutical Discovery, Development and Intellectual Property Processes.
Experience in leading groups of researchers including PhD level scientists.
Clear understanding of regulatory environments, pharmaceutical standards of care in target markets, critical relationships, and emerging technologies to provide Lilly with competitive access to opportunities of strategic interest.
Experience working in a matrixed environment as well as leading and using the matrix. Strong relational skills, demonstrated ability for efficient collaboration, prioritization and establishing effective work environments
