Reporting to the Senior Director, Diabetes and Complications Therapeutic Area (DCTA), the successful candidate will contribute to the discovery and early development of breakthrough therapies in diabetes with focus on beta-cell regeneration and islet cell therapy. Do you have experience managing data-driven research from project inception to clinical trial design? Defining and leading projects focused on innovative therapies for type 1 and type 2 diabetes at the intersection of immunology and beta-cell biology will be a key responsibility. This position is in a laboratory that uses an iPSC-derived islet platform to impact Lilly’s breakthrough therapeutic programs in endogenous beta-cell regeneration, islet cell replacement and immunomodulation. Working closely with bioinformatics scientists, in vitro and in vivo pharmacologists, chemists, manufacturing scientists and clinicians, you will identify and validate new targets, contribute to and influence drug discovery efforts, and support islet-cell therapy efforts across different stages in the portfolio.
Needed in this role is solid understanding of islet cell developmental biology and function, hands-on-experience with iPSC-derived platforms, deep knowledge of beta-cell physiology and a desire to be at the forefront of scientific innovation. Key components of the role are informing scientific direction, initiating and progressing efforts with focus on scientific rigor and effectiveness, and building and maintaining state-of-the art preclinical expertise. An additional opportunity of this role will be to identify and lead collaborations with academic and biotech partners that seek to complement and enhance the internal efforts.
Serve as expert for beta-cell development, differentiation and function.
Lead a lab focused on iPSC derived beta-cell platforms
Contribute to Lilly’s efforts in beta-cell regeneration and islet cell therapy
Develop innovative approaches and models for immunotherapy for type 1 diabetes
Contribute to cross-functional portfolio therapeutic development projects
Lead and assist in the identification, evaluation, and selection of new therapeutic targets across modalities
Design and coordinate the implementation of in vitro and in vivo assays for the development of clinical candidate molecules
Collaborate with chemists, siRNA and protein engineers to build structure-activity relationships and optimize the therapeutic for clinical evaluation
Define the relationships between therapeutic efficacy, patient subpopulations, clinical trial design and outcomes that significantly impact clinical development
Monitor research literature and regularly communicate current trends and innovative methods and applications to scientific partners; drive internalization of innovative research approaches
Engage Diabetes and Complications R&D senior management and partners for strategic alignment
Curate scientific alliances with forward-thinking leaders in academia/biotechnology to incorporate standard methodologies and key capabilities
- Ph.D. in Biology or relevant scientific area; emphasis on beta-cell development and function preferred. Postdoctoral fellowship(s) or experience in this area also preferred.
In-depth knowledge of stem cell biology with significance on pancreatic islets
Demonstrated experience to work in cross-functional scientific teams
Ability to set vision and identify paths for implementation, including ability to work collaboratively and drive new directions. Willingness to prioritize and make trade-offs
Strong oral and written communication skills; needs to be able to communicate effectively with senior leadership, internal and external partners and staff
Ability to lead a diverse set of team-members, and deliver effective mentorship and feedback
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Excellent self-management and organizational abilities
Experience in pharmaceutical or biotech industry with emphasis on drug discovery
Knowledge of bioinformatics methods and tools
