Lilly Senior Director - Counsel - Employee Benefits and Employment Law in Indianapolis, Indiana

Experienced and strategic attorney with impeccable judgment who will be a member of the Human Resources (HR) Legal team. Primary responsibility will be advising our Benefits and Compensation teams. Additional responsibilities will include labor and employment advice and counsel and litigation matters. Individual must be energized by working in a dynamic environment with broad responsibility. This is an exciting opportunity to join a thriving and proactive HR Legal team. Position reports to the Associate Vice President, Assistant General Counsel- Leader of Labor and Employment Law.

  • Provide proactive advice and counsel to Benefits and Compensation teams, including on retirement plans, health and welfare plans, compensation and equity-based incentive plans, fiduciary committees and related matters, leave of absence administration, claims and appeals, and government benefits related audits,

  • Provide proactive advice and counsel to HR on labor and employment matters, including ADA workplace accommodations, wage and hour, non-compete and release agreements, and other employee related matters, policies, and procedures.

  • Set strategy for, manage, and provide advice to senior leadership and the business on ERISA and employment litigation, HR investigations, and various high-risk matters.

  • Lead and manage the activities of outside counsel and coordinate internal efforts to meet ERISA and employment litigation requirements.

  • Oversee and advise on administrative agency investigations and audits.

  • Provide training and templates for HR clients on issues with legal implications.

  • Build and maintain relationships with key Lilly constituencies.

  • Maintain engagement with key external parties and entities, including counterparts at other companies in the industry, key government agencies, and outside counsel network.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s & J.D. degrees

  • Candidate must be admitted to the bar in at least one of the fifty states.

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience as a practicing attorney in areas of employee benefits or employment law.

  • Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to be employed in the United States. Lilly does not anticipate providing sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B or TN status) for this employment position.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with an ability to influence others.

  • Demonstrated ability to appropriately handle highly confidential information.

  • Demonstrated commitment to expand knowledge and adapt to a changing environment.

  • Experience working in a corporate legal department preferred.
