Lilly Utilities Automation Responsible Engineer in Indianapolis, Indiana

Organization Overview:

The Utilities organization delivers utility services to the manufacturing and development business units across the Lilly Technology Center. The group is critical in the manufacturing and delivery of lifesaving medicines that make life better around the world.

Responsibilities:

The Responsible Engineer’s role is oversight of the Lilly Technology Utility Monitoring System (UMS). The role will develop controls strategy, and provide mentorship to Automation Team members regarding methodology, standardization, and best practices concerning automated systems. The Responsible Engineer will deliver system specific guidance and vision to the Utility group at large, as well as implement the strategy to maintain compliance of the computer system and assure that our systems and equipment remain qualified and safe for use over their entire lifecycle.

Key Objectives:

  • Understand the Operational Control Strategies of LTC Utilities and how the integration of automation impacts process parameters, including knowing the relationship between process and automation and the critical operation parameters.

  • Collaborate with department leadership to understand strategic goals, and then drive the Automation system, and processes to meet those goals.

  • Work closely with customer areas and be responsible for understanding project needs, including the controls hardware, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Human Machine Interface (HMI).

  • Provide oversight related to system changes, maintenance and other interventions and ensure they do not adversely impact the qualification state of the system.

  • Apply technical skills to supply quantifiable business value as well as provide process improvements and process optimization through process control.

  • Provide end-user requirements for all Global Facilities Delivery (GFD) or Utilities capital projects that use an outside integrator to deliver validation results.

  • Produce and Maintain validation documentation related to UMS in compliance with the corporate Computer Systems Policies.

  • Provide analysis and technical consultation to process owners and automation team regarding process control.

  • Using statistical tools to better understand and appropriately reduce the sources of automation related process variability and identify improvement opportunities.

  • Troubleshoot and solve system infrastructure hardware and software problems

  • Assist department leadership in project prioritization and resource alignment.

  • Provide oversight for less experienced engineers who are assigned to equipment sets, systems processes or areas, and mentor as appropriate.

  • Conduct or lead the periodic review of direct impact facilities, utilities, and equipment systems to verify that they remain in a state that is fit for their intended use.

  • Understand and review the basis for the qualification of the system and ensure that it is appropriate for the intended purpose.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Engineering, Computer Science, or related science field

  • 4 years of Computer system/ Distributed Control System support experience

  • Computer System Validation (CSV) experience in a GMP environment

Additional Skills/Preferences:

  • Database management skills

  • Computer system security administration experience

  • Demonstrate strong oral and written communication and interpersonal interaction skills

  • Previous experience with Wonderware and Allen Bradley

  • Previous experience with GMP systems and documentation requirements

  • Previous experience with supporting IT related systems and servers

  • Previous experience with Lilly event and change control process

  • Proficiency with computer systems including Microsoft Office, Microsoft SharePoint, Visual Basic, SQL

Additional Information:

  • Engineer must complete Learning Plan for the Automation Responsible Engineer position.

  • Appropriate PPE must be worn as hazardous operations exist in the utilities area. Hazards in the manufacturing area for utilities systems may include, but are not limited to, acid, caustic, steam, chlorine, high pressures, high temperature, or high decibel/excessive noise.

  • Automation personnel are committed to the principles of continuous improvement; therefore, the Engineer should continually acquire technical and business knowledge and apply this knowledge to the role.

  • 24-hour availability via mobile communication device is required.

  • This is an in-person role and requires on-site presence.

  • Travel < 5%
