Main Purpose and Objectives of Position:

The Student Laboratory Analyst is a member of the Quality Control Laboratory and is responsible for conducting various analytical tests/assays to determine the identity, quality and purity of incoming raw materials, intermediates and drug substances in accordance with established quality control procedures. This also involves evaluation of novel raw materials and alternate sources of existing raw materials. The laboratory conducts a variety of tests/assays on in-process production samples and on samples submitted by Manufacturing, Science and Technology (MS&T). The laboratory also provides support for stability studies, the site clearance air monitoring programme, utility and environmental monitoring programmes. The Laboratory analyst will support the analytical testing required during new product introduction, including method transfer and validation. The laboratory may also provide analysis support for other groups within Eli Lilly e.g. reference standard characterisation, investigative testing, stability studies etc. The role also supports the installation and maintenance of equipment, associated SOPs, and required quality systems. In addition to the above, Laboratory Analysts will have the capability to run any other assays on a routine or non-routine basis as requested by various areas of the plant.

Scope:

The Laboratory Analyst operates within the Kinsale Quality Control Laboratory and is responsible for conducting various analytical procedures as described above. The Kinsale Quality Control Laboratory comprises of chemistry, microbiology and biotechnology areas. The Laboratory analyst should be capable of carrying out testing in any of these areas, with appropriate training such as aseptic technique training for microbiological testing.

Personal Considerations:

The laboratory will be staffed by a number of Laboratory Analysts, some of whom may be working on a shift basis, depending on production support needs. A Laboratory Analyst will normally work under the technical supervision of an Analytical Chemist or Analytical Microbiologist, who will provide technical oversight for analytical testing.

Key Responsibilities:

  • The Laboratory Analyst is responsible for conducting various analytical procedures as specified above in accordance with current corporate specifications and cGMP’s and for maintaining these SOP’s.

  • The Laboratory Analyst will be responsible for tabulating and consolidating assay results, lead times and other performance indicators and be capable of presenting informal reports of results to immediate supervision.

  • The Laboratory Analyst will be responsible for entering results into a computer storage system (LIMS), as well as performing testing using automated systems.

  • Working with a high level of analytical instrumentation, the Laboratory Analyst may be involved in the qualification of these instruments and in their routine maintenance.

  • The Laboratory Analyst may also be involved in the development, validation and verification of new methodologies, as part of new product introductions or process improvement activities.

  • The Laboratory Analyst should be capable of recognising atypical assay behaviour and normally encountered equipment failure.

  • The Laboratory Analyst will be involved in deviation investigations and will record any errors encountered, as per procedures and training.

  • The Laboratory Analyst will follow all relevant Environmental, Health and Safety procedures and will be involved in incident investigations as required.

  • The Laboratory Analyst may also be responsible for the maintenance of an inventory of chemicals and supplies used to perform analytical testing.

  • The Laboratory Analyst may assist in the training of other personnel and as his/her level of skill develops, may be responsible for the full training of other Analysts.

  • As a member of the technical personnel, he/she will be responsible for adhering to, and improving, where appropriate, safety procedures to protect him/her, other personnel and company property.

  • Recognising the importance of the quality control function in pharmaceutical production, the Laboratory Analyst should display a high level of integrity in the performance of his/her work.

  • He/she should be capable of relating well to other people with whom he/she comes in contact, both within and outside of the laboratory area.

  • The Laboratory Analyst is knowledgeable of general scientific methods and is capable of learning and executing new techniques and instrumentation after appropriate training.

  • The Laboratory Analyst may also be requested to partake in or lead area or cross-functional continuous improvement projects e.g. Six Sigma or other appropriate methodology.
