Our 35,000 employees around the world work to discover and bring life-changing medicines to those who need them, improve the understanding and management of disease, and give back to our communities through philanthropy and volunteerism. We give our best effort to our work, and we put people first. We’re looking for people who are determined to make life better for people around the world.

Organization Overview

At Lilly, we serve an extraordinary purpose. We make a difference for people around the globe by discovering, developing and delivering medicines that help them live longer, healthier, more active lives. Not only do we deliver breakthrough medications, but you also can count on us to develop creative solutions to support communities through philanthropy and volunteerism.

Are you looking to make a significant difference by contributing to next generation therapeutics for pain and neuropathy?

We are seeking an enthusiastic and ambitious post-doctoral scientist with strong research and communication skills to contribute to high visible research projects. Your work will contribute to the development of genetic medicines to treat chronic pain and peripheral neuropathy. In this role, you will:

  • Identify, characterize and utilize novel receptors to deliver medicinal payloads to sensory and/or autonomic neurons in vitro and in vivo. Generate testable hypotheses and investigate mechanisms of action for successful (and failed) neuronal delivery approaches.

  • Collaborate across Lilly sites with scientists with diverse expertise and background in Cambridge, Indianapolis and San Diego.

  • Identify areas of key need across preclinical development and champion creative solutions to address those needs. Maintain external awareness and learning to benefit our organization.

Our Neuroscience Next Generation Therapeutics group is a newly formed team with a focus on using novel therapeutic modalities to deliver medicines for chronic pain and neurodegenerative disorders. The team, based at our Cambridge Innovation Center in Kendall Square, will work with internal and external partners to identify and deliver new novel therapies into patients at speed. The team is seeking highly motivated and dedicated postdoctoral scientist to join our fast-paced, interdisciplinary team as we leverage innovative RNA/oligonucleotide/gene and genomic based therapeutic agents to enhance our portfolio.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Identify, characterize and utilize novel receptors to deliver medicinal payloads to sensory and/or autonomic neurons in vitro and in vivo. Generate testable hypotheses and investigate mechanisms of action for successful (and failed) neuronal delivery approaches.

  • Establish dissociated and whole-mount culture systems of rodent dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and autonomic ganglia. Develop and utilize neurosphere of sensory neurons and/or 3D organoid culture with human iPSC-derived cells for delivery of novel therapeutic agents.

  • Develop, validate, and perform fit-for-purpose molecular, biochemical and cell-based assays to evaluate PK/PD of systemically delivered therapeutic agents in vitro and in vivo.

  • Provide written and oral communication of work in lab reports and team meetings.

  • Accurate recording of all practical work: completion of electronic lab notebook to Lilly procedure quality standards.

  • Attend scientific conferences and present findings relevant to project work. Publish 1-2 manuscripts in high-profile journals.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Recent PhD (or enrolled student with a graduation date preferably before September 2022) in neuroscience, molecular/cellular biology, biochemistry or a related life sciences discipline.

Additional Skills/Preferences:

  • Experience in DRG collection, culture and histology, calcium/voltage imaging, rodent surgery and behavioral models is highly desired.

  • Hands-on experience in molecular and biochemical methods, such as isolation of DNA/RNA, preparation of protein lysates from ex-vivo tissue and cell cultures, RT-PCR, Western blot/ELISA, and immunohistochemistry.

  • Familiar with Microsoft suite programs, analytical software associated with methods.

  • Capable of working independently yet in a collaborative team environment.

  • Ability to adapt and exercise flexibility for changing platform needs, workflows and projects.

About Eli Lilly’s Postdoctoral Scientist Program

When it comes to research and development, our goal is to discover and deliver innovative medicines that make life better for people around the world. It’s challenging, expensive and often filled with failure. But even when we fail, we advance medical science and understanding by learning more about diseases, biology and chemistry – ultimately bringing new solutions one step closer to reality.

Over the course of our history, we have shed light on some of the toughest health care problems known to man – diabetes, heart disease, infectious diseases, neuroscience disorders, cancer and more. We could not pursue this without our research and development team.

Postdoctoral scientists help us continue this pursuit. During your experience you will get:

  • Top industry research experience

  • Mentoring by some of Lilly’s top scientists

  • Laboratory and classroom training and education to further your development

  • Collaboration and networking across dozens of postdoctoral scientists and other researchers
