The Discovery Chemistry & Technologies organization within Lilly Research Laboratories is a diverse and dynamic group seeking a highly skilled scientist to join the structural biology team. We support drug discovery for numerous innovative projects. We are looking for qualified scientists for biophysical assay support of challenging drug discovery targets including GPCRs and membrane proteins. The individual will work with diverse team of scientists and will be responsible to employ groundbreaking biophysical technologies to advance drug discovery for GPCRs or other membrane or soluble protein targets for fragment-based drug discovery (FBDD) and structure-based drug design (SBDD) efforts. Broad experience with membrane proteins, along with a proven track record of biophysical and biochemical assays is required. Required Experience and Skills

  • Strong background in Biophysical methods and extensive experience working with integral membrane proteins. Able to thrive in a dynamic team environment to support drug discovery against novel targets including but not limited to GPCRs and ion channels

  • Partner closely with other biophysicists, structural biologists, protein biochemists, biochemical assay group, and medicinal chemists to develop integrative approaches and address specific project needs and challenges

  • Design, enable, and perform Biophysical assays to validate and characterize small-molecule or biologic ligand interaction to protein targets and their mechanism of action (MoA)

  • Apply a wide range of Biochemical and Biophysical methods to assess membrane protein integrity, to ensure that high-quality, functional, and relevant reagents are used for assays and structural analysis for targets in different therapeutic areas

Basic Qualifications

Ph.D. in Biophysics, Structural Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry or other relevant field with 2 years of post degree experience/training or MS in similar fields with 8+ years of relevant experience

Additional Skills/Preferences

  • Experience with membrane prep, detergent solubilized, or nano-disc packaged GPCR

  • SPR, BLI, and ITC experience to quantify binding kinetics and affinity

  • Hands on experience of radio-ligand and fluorescence based binding assay (e.g. FRET, fluorescence polarization assay, etc.) for integral membrane proteins will be a plus

  • Knowledge and experience in Mass Spec, protein and/or ligand-based NMR, thermal shift assays, dynamic/static light scattering, and affinity selection techniques for membrane protein is advantageous

  • Experience in soluble and integral membrane protein purification, conjugation

  • Extensive knowledge of GPCR biology will be a plus

  • Prior industry experience and a strong publication record

  • Flexibility to work in an environment with constantly evolving priorities and completion timelines; strong interpersonal, written & verbal communication, and problem-solving skills

  • Strong capability to collaborate with scientists in multiple fields and to mentor staff scientists in drug discovery
