Lilly Advisor-Molecular Biology/Gene Expression Scientist in San Diego, California

The Discovery Chemistry & Technologies organization within Lilly Research Laboratories is a diverse and dynamic group seeking a highly skilled scientist to join the structural biology team. We support drug discovery for numerous innovative projects and are looking for qualified scientists with expertise in recombinant protein expression. The individual will work with diverse team of scientists and will be responsible to implement gene-to-protein workflows for challenging drug discovery targets including GPCRs and membrane proteins. Broad experience and proven track record with E. Coli and Insect cell (Baculovirus-BV) expression systems is required for this position.   • Design clones to produce diverse drug discovery targets, and research reagents using prokaryotic and eukaryotic expression systems. This includes construction of clones with complicated fusions, mutations, multiple tags and cleavage sites etc.

  • Innovate to develop core technologies and apply state-of the art technologies to achieve success in delivering needed molecular biology reagents to support drug discovery efforts.

  • Experience in basic molecular biology cloning, sequence analysis, tissue culture, baculovirus virus production, small scale expression and solubility analysis is required.

  • Experience in large scale fermentations (WAVE and flasks) of insect (BV) and mammalian cells is preferred

  • Partnering closely with other structural biologists, biophysicists, protein biochemists and in vitro pharmacologists to develop integrative approaches and address specific project needs and challenges

  • Interpret experimental data, along with observations from the literature, to provide innovative solutions to project teams.

  • Communicate experimental data and key findings to project teams

  • Contribute to scientific projects where solutions are developed through teamwork.

Basic Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Biophysics, Biochemistry, Structural Biology, or other relevant field or

  • B.Sc or M.Sc with 7+ years of applicable experience in relevant field mentioned above is required (preferable industry experience).

Additional Skills/Preferences:

  • Experience in mammalian expression system

  • Experience in Bac Mam expression system

  • Experience in recombinant protein purification and structural biology is advantageous

  • Experience highly preferred in direct evolution to mutagenize protein targets to screen for improved thermostability, expression, and yield.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of GPCR biology and pharmacology will be a plus

  • Experience in development and screening of nanobodies and Fabs using yeast system

  • Experience in cell-free protein expression of human soluble and membrane proteins

  • Flexibility to work in a team environment with constantly evolving priorities and completion timelines, with strong interpersonal, written & verbal communication, and problem-solving skills

  • Strong capability to collaborate with scientists in multiple fields

  • Familiarity with gene-to-structure workflow
