The Biotechnology Discovery Research Division at LBC-San Diego, responsible for generating, characterizing, and optimizing biotherapeutic from lead generation through lead optimization and preclinical development is hiring. We support cross-disciplinary efforts to engineer innovative biotherapeutic that treat metabolic, autoimmune, and neurologic diseases. This is an opportunity for an independent self-motivated researcher to join the Protein Bioscience Group in Lilly San Diego. We are seeking a cellular and molecular biologist to assist in the expression of novel therapeutic proteins and to work with cross-functional teams in drug discovery to enable new technical capabilities. The successful candidate will lead the effort to craft and implement efficient gene-to-protein workflows to generate novel therapeutic proteins and research tool reagents.


  • Design and produce novel therapeutic proteins and research reagents using prokaryotic and eukaryotic expression systems by integrating biology and a deep understanding of molecular properties

  • Partner with molecular engineers, and protein scientists to address specific project needs and challenges

  • Coordinate and present data to support decisions in cross-functional teams

  • Maintain a current knowledge in the field, attend meetings and conferences, and contribute to original research publications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph. D. in protein biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, structural biology, biophysics, or related field.

  • 2+ years of experience beyond Ph. D. education in a pharmaceutical, biotech, or research organization.

Additional Skills/Preferences:

  • Demonstrate problem-solving skills and an ability for creative thinking

  • Experience of using protein structural analysis to tackle expression, function and/or stability challenges

  • Extensive hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge in recombinant protein production in mg to gram scale using multiple expression systems (E. coli, insect cells, yeast) including vector design and construction

  • In-depth knowledge and hands-on experience in recombinant protein purification, analytical characterizations, and assays.

  • Knowledge of biophysical methods and tools for protein characterization

  • Solid understanding in molecular biology, and gene manipulation techniques

  • Strong teammate and creative problem solver ready to work efficiently with multi-functional colleagues across geographies in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to prioritize work and meet targeted timelines.
