Organization Overview:

The Biotechnology Discovery Research (BioTDR) group at Lilly’s Biotechnology Center in San Diego discovers medicines that address significant unmet needs by integrating biology with innovative scientific capabilities in protein engineering and computational sciences. We collaborate with colleagues across Lilly, including scientists in Therapeutic Area biology, Biomolecule formulation and developability, ADME, Toxicology, & PK/PD (ATP), Statistics, Clinical Development, and more. Our team is looking for a motivated manager with deep protein engineering expertise and broad knowledge of drug development to join us and to make a difference for patients and the communities we serve! The successful candidate will oversee a group of protein engineers responsible for advancing Lilly’s strong position in the design, protein engineering, and optimization of bio products. This team focuses on innovative research to deliver on existing platforms and develop/advance new protein engineering platforms that improve our understanding of protein therapeutics and next gen biologics.


  • Lead a group of research path scientific staff with protein engineering responsibilities across therapeutic areas

  • Provide scientific and administrative leadership; allocate and prioritize resources, collaborate on scientific and business issues

  • Closely partner with colleagues across Lilly, including other groups in Biotechnology Discovery Research, Medicines Innovation Hub, ATP, and therapeutic areas

  • Represent BioTDR on critical cross-functional initiatives

  • Serve as a collaboration leader for crucial external collaborations to ensure that all parties work together as a cohesive team

  • Evaluate new technologies, techniques, study designs or equipment and assess the applicability to current or future functional area needs

  • Develop and implement the internal or external innovation strategy for key platform technology initiatives

  • Serve as a member of BSG and BioTDR Lead Team strategy groups

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph. D. in molecular biology, biological chemistry, biophysics, structural biology, or related field

  • 8+ years of experience in biotherapeutic discovery in pharmaceutical and/or biotechnology companies

Additional Preferences:

  • Passion to use deep domain-knowledge in protein engineering and drug development to develop strategies to advance innovative protein engineering platforms.

  • Leader with extensive experience collaborating with internal and external partners across geographies to build and advance strategies and deliver impactful business outcomes.

  • Attention to detail and critical thinking. Able to prioritize work and meet target timelines.

  • Demonstrated success leading teams of >10 people and cross-functional, business-critical projects. Ability to ensure accountability of oneself and others.

  • Proven ability to positively impact team culture and to demonstrate flexibility in a fast-paced environment.

  • Develop talent at all levels and ensure meticulous performance management practices

  • Impeccable organizational skills. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills. Excellent computer skills (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams).
